Luna Detention Center Release Paths
Luna County Detention Center is the county’s only verified adult custodial facility. County materials also call it the Luna County Adult Detention Center. A community release may follow sentence completion, bail, a court order, release of an Adult Probation Office hold, or dismissal. The facility must receive proper written authority and check for other charges or lawful detainers before the person leaves.
Another class of exit is a custody handoff. Transfer, extradition, commitment to New Mexico Corrections Department, or movement under federal authority removes a person from the Luna County placement while custody continues. Transfer papers identify the receiving jurisdiction or agency. The receiving officer also identifies themself. That receiving-agency record is the key difference between a community release and an administrative release to another custodian.

Confirm Luna Detention Center Releases
The official Luna County detention page links the JailTracker public roster, the online starting point for current adult custody visibility. It is not labeled as a release archive. No county-published 24-hour or 72-hour release tab, update schedule, or post-release retention window was located. A person who is absent may have left, transferred, entered another system, or been affected by a data delay.
- Search the roster for the exact person and compare any available identifiers with the known booking.
- Call the facility with the full name, date of birth, approximate booking date, and booking number if known.
- Ask whether the local placement ended through community release or transfer, and request the actual date and reason.
- Obtain the archived booking and release material when the answer must be documented.
- Follow the receiving custodian in NMCD, federal court or USMS, another jail, or ICE when the Luna record shows a handoff.

The roster answers a current-custody question. An archived Luna County Detention Center release record is required to classify a past exit.
Online, phone, in-person, and written checks serve different needs. The roster is the fastest public check. A phone call can clarify whether staff can confirm an exit or route the inquiry. In-person inspection may be useful for a public booking sheet. A written request creates the clearest trail when the exact date, written authority, or receiving agency matters. Use the narrowest channel that can answer the question, then preserve the response with the booking identifiers.
Roster absence is not a release type. Ask whether the person entered the community or went to a named receiving agency.
Luna Detention Center Release Records
The facility policy manual describes a detailed evidence chain. At booking, staff search the Jail Management System for an archived record and verify identity by photograph, date of birth, Social Security number, and detainee ID. The file can include booking details, court material, property receipts, classification, incident records, program entries, and disposition. Released detainee files are archived electronically.
During release, staff verify written authority, compare the release date in the detainee folder and JMS, review warrants and detainers, and confirm identity. The Court Liaison and shift supervisor sign the papers. The Booking Officer then enters the release information. Property is receipted back, and remaining account funds are disbursed. These linked entries are more reliable than a screenshot of a missing name.

Exclude medical, juvenile, victim-identifying, security-sensitive, sealed, or expunged material. New Mexico IPRA does not require staff to build a new report that is not already maintained. It does support a request for named existing files or an existing date-bounded release log if one is kept.
A complete request also separates the jail record from the court record. New Mexico Case Lookup supplies public docket history, but not the filed document. The Sixth Judicial District location page identifies the Luna courts. District Court handles felony matters, while Magistrate Court handles misdemeanors, DWI and traffic cases, plus preliminary felony stages. Request the judgment, dismissal, bond order, or other filed authority from the exact court. Compare it with the jail’s JMS exit, because court authorization and physical release can occur at different points.

Facility policy describes a verbal route through administrative staff during business hours or the shift supervisor after hours. A written request is still the stronger choice when the actual release date, reason, authority, or receiving agency must be documented.

No reviewed source publishes a guaranteed release hour or family waiting area. Continuous jail operation does not mean a person will leave at any requested time. Call about a named release and ask for current, safe pickup instructions rather than relying on a general timing assumption.
Luna Detention Center Bond Release
The detention policy recognizes cash, cash and surety, property, own-recognizance, and ten-percent court bonds. Booking must be complete before a bond can be posted. Property bonds go through Luna Magistrate or District Court. The detainee selects the bondsperson, and jail staff do not recommend one. Bond business is conducted in the front lobby.
The policy lists a $10 detention-center processing fee payable by money order and describes after-hours or weekend cash bonds at the facility, while ordinary-hour cash bonds go through the court. Payment practice can change, so verify it by phone before acting. A posted bond also does not override another valid hold. The release entry and court conditions should be checked together.
Luna Detention Center Federal Transfers
Luna County Detention Center holds some U.S. Marshals Service prisoners under contract. This is a custody population inside the same county facility, not a separate searchable building. The 2012 county plan says the complex was built in 2000 with a federal-contract role. A September 2024 county packet again described many USMS detainees, but that dated figure is not a current count or permanent capacity.
A federal pretrial detainee can leave the Luna roster after federal court release, transfer to another contract jail, or delivery to BOP. The Bureau of Prisons locator does not reliably show every USMS pretrial placement. Use the federal docket, Luna transfer or release record, and the responsible USMS prisoner channel. BOP becomes the proper national locator for sentenced federal custody and may show a release date after the federal prison term.
Luna Release Detainers and Handoffs
Luna County’s policy expressly separates community release from transfer and extradition. Staff check wants, warrants and detainers, confirm that local charges have final dispositions, and verify the paperwork naming the receiving jurisdiction. Pending warrants alone do not authorize continued detention without the required court authority, but a lawful detainer can change where the person goes.
This local check is especially important when federal, state and county systems overlap. A roster exit should be followed by the receiving-agency field, federal docket, NMCD record, or signed release order. Luna Release Property and Naloxone
Every item and valuable listed in JMS is signed back during release, and remaining account funds are returned through the current disbursement method. Missing property must be reported at once in writing to the Director or designee. The receipt can provide an additional booking-specific trail if identity or completion of the release procedure is disputed.
Medical staff also offer overdose education and, upon request, a naloxone kit before community release. County policy records the kit on a receipt form and cites NMSA 1978 § 33-2-51. This service applies to the community-release process. It does not establish the legal reason for release and should be read with the signed authority and JMS exit entry.
